About a single father (Beau Bridges) who strives to feed his children (Jena Malone, Josef Sommer) after losing his job, Hidden in America might sound like it's drawing on two of the Hollywood Commandments: "Thou shalt cry" and "Thou shalt learn a lesson." Indeed, director Martin Bell and writers Peter Silverman and Michael De Guzman have made a tearjerker, but the difference is, their film lacks a blatant agenda. Though the characters face extreme hardship, there's no over-dramatizing or pitying, only a small story imbued with quiet dignity. Bell's understated direction further contributes to the film's thoughtfulness, while the performances, particularly Jena Malone's, are subtle and moving. Recommended. (L. Russo)
