Based on Nick Hornby's witty best seller, High Fidelity stars John Cusack as a struggling record store owner who, when his current amour takes a powder, drags himself and his best buds through a hilarious recap of his failed past relationships. Though not as funny, nor nearly as dark, as Hornby's acclaimed novel, this very well-scripted comedy is still a major crowd pleaser, with the invariably impressive Cusack backed by a strong supporting cast, particularly Jack Black and Todd Louiso as Cusack's hired help, and the luminous Iben Hjejle, whom I vow is destined for big things. Granted, it goes all soft in the end with a typically pat Hollywood wrap-up, but this is still one of the best romantic comedies to be released in the last several years. Highly recommended. (S. C.
