For anyone who's wondered whatever happened to director Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy), this 1992 Mexican production offers a clue. Roberto Sosa stars as a gung-ho policeman who gradually lets principles slide while trying to keep both his wife and his mistress happy. As a portrait of a good man gone bad, Highway Patrolman offers little new; however, some of the individual scenes did echo the quirky brilliance that informed Cox's earlier efforts. Optional. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review—Nov. 8, 2011—Microcinema, 100 min., in Spanish w/English subtitles, R, $24.95—Making its first appearance on DVD, 1991's Highway Patrolman sports a nice transfer with extras including audio commentary by director Alex Cox and producer Lorenzo O'Brien, a “Patrulleros & Patrulleras” cast and crew featurette (35 min.), Cox's 2005 short film “Edge City” (35 min.), and “From Edge City to Mapimi” on the connection between the short and the feature film (6 min.). Bottom line: a fine extras package for an uneven film from cult director Cox.]
