In this beautifully rendered epic adventure set in 1832 France, a handsome Italian soldier (Olivier Martinez) runs from Austrian spies and the cholera epidemic. On his journey, he meets the fair Pauline de Théus (Juliette Binoche), a brave countess searching for her husband. Together, they traverse the dangerous countryside. Based on French author Jean Giono's book, The Horseman on the Roof features forbidden love, courageous acts, and exciting escapes in a time when disease and turmoil afflicted Europe. Director Jean-Paul Rappeneau (Cyrano de Bergerac) sets a fast pace, and Martinez and Binoche bring dignity to the proceedings with their subtle, heartfelt performances. Recommended. (L. Russo)
