Swiss dramatist Frederich Durenmatt's The Visit of the Old Woman, has been adapted into a scathing satire of human greed. When an extraordinarily rich woman returns home, the destitute residents of a small African village muster up the most obsequious reception they can afford, and are offered a handsome reward. But there's a small catch: they have to kill a good-hearted local storekeeper. Like the animal which inspires the title, Hyenas provides some royal laughs, but also carries a serious reflective bite. [Note: a French soundtrack is laid over the Wolof soundtrack so it sounds like the characters are speaking double; but if you can overlook this, Hyenas is a gem.] (R. Pitman)
