When I saw the box for I Love Toy Trains 5, I suspected this might be one of those mystifying railroading videos which just feature endless shots of trains coming ‘round the bend ad infinitum. (My friend calls these kinds of videos "rail porn.") Well, lo and behold, this was love at first sight! I Love Toy Trains 5 is an absolutely charming and fun filled ride on the rails back to a time when toy making was an art. Colorful toy trains zip around marvelous train layouts, and small adventures materialize, often accompanied by hilarious sound effects, funny music and narration. Rare trains like the Blue Comet, the Mayflower, and the Hiawatha are featured as well as occasional brief shots of real life steam trains in beautiful settings. The layouts and accessories are simply wonderful, and I never tired of watching various dramas evolve, including a mechanical switchman and the sundry things which get in the way of his automatic switching house door, or an overzealous engine which always speeds around the rails and causes humorous and highly satisfying pileups. This is a video where even the FBI warning is funny: "Tom McComas spent a lot of time and money on this video. Don't copy it." Guaranteed enjoyment.
