Jeff Garlin, a second-string standup comedian best known for his recurring role in Curb Your Enthusiasm, apparently thought he could be the next Woody Allen, judging by this fitfully funny outing featuring the comic as writer, director, and star. James Aaron (Garlin) is a struggling, middle-aged Chicago actor (still living with his mother) who has three goals: lose weight, land a great part, and find himself a girlfriend. Ditching an Overeaters Anonymous meeting in favor of a trip to the local ice-cream parlor, James meets a potential soul mate in Beth (Sarah Silverman), but the relationship takes some odd turns. Some of the scenes are quite funny, while others fall horribly flat, and a few potentially hilarious sequences are bungled due to Garlin's slipshod direction. His smartest move, however, was to surround himself with a terrific supporting cast that includes Bonnie Hunt, Amy Sedaris, Gina Gershon, and Dan Castellaneta—seasoned comic actors all. It's a pity they lacked a sharper script and better direction. Not recommended. (E. Hulse)
