Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) stars as Helen, a coastal smalltown hairdresser who is contending with a traumatic past, a current boyfriend pestering her for sex, an infatuated young teenager who has been mute since his mother's suicide and seems to be some kind of electronic bugging savant (as in Linda Tripp), and a former lover, Martin, just out of prison and defying his probation officer by hounding Helen. As Kevin Costner proclaimed in Bull Durham, "We're dealing with some issues." Cinematographer Slawomir Idziak was honored with a Special Mention for his "haunting images" at the Berlin Film Festival. The film is artfully done and the performances excellent, but the characters are a mostly creepy and unsympathetic lot. An optional purchase. (K. Lee Benson)
