Because this is a movie about AIDS, critics are supposed to roll over and play nice, but this real-life inspired comedy/drama, written and directed by Randal Kleiser (The Blue Lagoon, ok?) about a gay movie director whose ex-lover is dying of AIDS is a cliché ridden vanity project that would just about make the cut for a sitcom episode, were it not for the subject matter. Before committing suicide, Nick (Eric Roberts) decides to have one last party where everybody either trades one-liners or tears, except for Brandon (Gregory Harrison), the director who gave Nick the boot when he discovered Nick was HIV-positive--he's looking for salvation. Lots of cameo appearances by actors who apparently thought the film was a worthwhile cause (blink and you'll miss Sally Kellerman). There are a few moving moments in the film--how could there not be?--but there sandwiched between stretches of very small talk. Not a necessary purchase. (R. Pitman)
