Writer-director Philippe Claudel is a literature teacher as well as a filmmaker, so it's not surprising that his story of two long-separated sisters reconnecting after the elder sibling is released from a lengthy stint in prison has the precision and restraint of a good novella or short story. I've Loved You So Long is also notable for its outstanding lead performance by Golden Globe nominee Kristin Scott Thomas as Juliette, the enigmatic, controlled but tense woman welcomed home by her younger sister Lea (Elsa Zylberstein). The nature of Juliette's crime is not revealed for the first half-hour, after which we follow Juliette's reintegration into society: securing a probationary job, being romanced by one of Lea's colleagues, and earning the affection of Lea's adopted daughters and trust of Lea's husband. But the most important relationship here is the one between the sisters, which both struggle to rebuild after years of mutual neglect. Lea eventually discovers the reason behind Juliette's apparently unforgivable crime, a revelation that not only softens Juliette but even transforms her into a heroic if tragic figure. Perceptive writing, astute direction, casual camerawork, and fine performances (especially by Scott Thomas) turn what might have become a glossy soap opera in less cultivated hands into a subtle, delicate film that is powerfully resonant. Highly recommended. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Philippe Claudel (6 min.), and trailers. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release is the BD Live function. Bottom line: a small extras package for a fine drama.] (F. Swietek)
