A sardonic yet adoringly antic allegory about a menagerie of neurotic Long Island oddballs following and/or abandoning their dreams during an over-long eclipse, this strange little film got left behind like a red-headed stepchild at 1999's Sundance Film Festival after winning Best Director for first-time filmmaker Eric Mendelsohn. Highly entertaining but amateurish, it's a kind of Woody Allen-meets-American Beauty-lite fable about suburban foibles and frustrations, featuring Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Madeline Kahn, Barbara Barrie and Aaron Harnick as a failed movie director returning ignominiously to his sleepy hometown. Long available only to Blockbuster Video customers through an exclusive license, this sell-through-priced indie hit is a strong optional purchase. (R. Blackwelder)
