Based on the graphic novel by Darwyn Cooke and co-produced by Bruce Timm, who was responsible for the highly acclaimed Batman animated series from the 1990s, Justice League: The New Frontier revitalizes one of DC Comics' most venerable franchises: the Justice League of America, a conglomeration of DC's biggest and brightest superheroes that includes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and the Martian Manhunter. This all-new, feature-length animated film set in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s brings these characters together in an alliance against a monstrous entity so powerful that even the Man of Steel is unable to bring it down, leaving humanity itself at stake. The story is strictly comic-book stuff, clearly fashioned along the lines of the Justice League's original 1960s adventures, but it's been cleverly developed by writers Cooke and Stan Berkowitz and director Dave Bullock, and features animation that employs a modern narrative style (i.e., one influenced by live-action movies rather than old cartoons) full of vivid and dynamic imagery (although parents should note that the PG-13 rating is justly earned for violence and bloodletting). The impressive voice cast includes Neil Patrick Harris, Lucy Lawless, Kyra Sedgwick, Brooke Shields, and Kyle MacLachlan. Recommended. [DVD extras include two audio commentaries (one by various crew members, the other by co-writer Cooke), a documentary on the history of the Justice League from inception to recent animated entries (40 min.), and a sneak peek at the animated title Batman: Gotham Knight. Bottom line: a decent extras package for a solid film. (Note: this is also available in a two-disc collector's edition priced at $24.98 and on Blu-ray for $29.99.)] (E. Hulse)
