Studiously and self-consciously quirky, this comedy stars writer-director Scott Prendergast as man-child Salman, a socially maladroit 32-year-old who agrees to help his jittery sister-in-law—Army wife Leslie (Lisa Kudrow)—whose two young sons have become uncontrollable brats since their dad went to Iraq. Initially the boys are stunned by the sight of Salman clad in the giant, Smurf-like puffy suit of “Kabluey,” a character chosen by marketers to attract potential renters to a large, empty office complex. But the little hellions aren't mollified for long, and Salman will need every ounce of strength to help Leslie keep them in check. Prendergast is aided by a personable supporting cast that includes Teri Garr, Christine Taylor, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Parnell, and Conchata Ferrell, but while Kudrow is terrific as the really, really desperate housewife, Prendergast himself is only fitfully effective, and the story is simply too thin for a feature-length comedy. Not a necessary purchase. (E. Hulse)
