Based on the true story of a Sicilian magistrate (Carlo Cecchi) who attempts to expose mafia-connected officials in the government, La Scorta gets so caught up in political intrigue that its characters languish. Told through the eyes of the four bodyguards (Claudio Amendola, Enrico Lo Verso, Tony Sperandeo, Ricky Memphis), Ricky Tognazzi's film does have tension, a tight script, and a fascinating plot, but it's not enough since the characters aren't well defined. The bodyguards are risking their lives every moment of the day, yet their motives seem doubtful without any proper explanation. Still, La Scorta is a well-made thriller, for those willing to suspend their disbelief. Lightly recommended. (L. Russo)[DVD Review--Jan. 24, 2006--Blue Underground, 95 min., in Italian w/English subtitles, not rated, $19.95--Making its first appearance on DVD, 1993's La Scorta sports an acceptable transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. DVD extras include audio commentary by director Ricky Tognazzi and producer Claudio Bonivento, and “Judging La Scorta” interviews with Tognazzi, Bonivento, costar Claudio Amendola, co-writers Graziano Diana and Simona Izzo, and cinematographer Alessio Gelsini. Bottom line: a solid extras package for a so-so film.]
