Last Summer in the Hamptons

In this Henry Jaglom-written-and-directed indie, New York City's greatest theatrical family rants, weeps, whines, and smokes its way through the last weekend it will own a ritzy East Hampton retreat. A visiting Hollywood film actress adds to the drama-or is it comedy?-by pitting various family members against each other in successive bids to act in, direct, or rewrite a nephew's brilliant new play. Despite the outstanding acting (the cast includes Viveca Lindfors, Martha Plimpton, and Roddy McDowall), and a few scattered insights into the aging process and creativity, this movie is inexplicably dull, considering-or is it because of?-the histrionics.
