Based on historical figures, this Japanese anime offers a gorgeous take on French court intrigue. Set in 1742 Paris, the story follows D'Eon de Beaumont, a member of the secret police who protects the royal interests, serving as the eyes and ears of King Louis XV. D'Eon is searching for clues to the murder of his sister Lia, slowly uncovering evidence that points to those closest to the king. Not surprisingly—since this is anime—supernatural twists have been added to the historical mix, including alchemists who are powerful sorcerers and zombie-like creatures, not to mention the fact that after Lia's death, her soul—seeking revenge—possesses D'Eon. This initial volume, compiling the first four episodes of 24, presented on a dual-language disc rated TV-14, is breathtaking to watch, but can be very confusing for viewers unfamiliar with pre-Revolutionary France. Fortunately, ADV has included a commentary track as well as a booklet with historical notes. Boasting stellar animation and movie-quality artwork, this is a flagship anime series that should appeal to a wider audience given its period piece trappings. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice.
