Indian director Geetu Mohandas makes a powerfully understated debut with this unblinking look at 21st-century Indian life that takes viewers from the countryside to the mean streets of Delhi. The plot centers on Kamala (Geetanjali Thapa), a young wife who decides to travel from her bucolic village on the Tibetan border to the bustling and dangerous city of Delhi to search for her missing husband. He was forced to relocate for a temporary construction job, but Kamala has not heard from him since his departure. Accompanied by her 3-year-old daughter and an adorable baby goat, Kamala sets out on a grueling hike toward the nearest train station. Along the way, she meets sketchy drifter Nawazuddin (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who reluctantly agrees to help her find her husband…for a price (all the money she has, in fact). The camera follows the trio through all manner of wild landscapes until they reach Delhi and are dumped smack dab into a crowded urban hell rife with corruption, crime, and homelessness. As Kamala's situation grows increasingly desperate, Nawazuddin appears to be more sympathetic to Kamala's plight, although disturbingly unexpected revelations lie ahead. Recommended. (M. Sandlin)
