Fernando Pérez's international film festival award-winner offers up an engaging blend of mystical realism and absurdist comedy, set in turn-of-the-century (as in this century) Cuba. Bebe, a "happy" teenager, narrates the stories of three quirky characters: Julia, a nursing home attendant prone to yawning, who faints at the mere mention of the word "sex"; Elpidio, a petty thief with mother issues; and, most intriguing, Mariana, who is as passionate about men as she is about her dancing. Vying for a lead ballerina role as Giselle, she makes a vow of chastity, only to fall in lust with her leading man. The Buena Vista-esque soundtrack, featuring the music of Bola De Nieve and Benny More, sets a transporting mood, making this a winning choice for world cinema collections. Recommended. (K.
