“I'm bored,” Lindsay Lohan pouts at one point (since there is not even one fleeting moment when she is convincing as Elizabeth Taylor, let's just call her Lindsay), and viewers will probably feel likewise. Filmmaker Lloyd Kramer's Liz & Dick is a laughable—even by Lifetime standards—biopic charting the tumultuous on-again, off-again Hollywood love affair that scandalized the world. Cynically cast as one of the silver screen's most iconic and indelible goddesses (a ratings bid that spectacularly failed), Lindsay can't be bothered to give even a rote performance, and she displays little chemistry with Grant Bowler as Richard Burton, although he emerges from this train wreck unscathed by comparison. An odd framing device has Lindsay and Burton offering commentary from the afterlife (after the first 20 minutes, you'll wish you could join them). Directed without a glimmer of style and sporting ludicrous dialogue, Liz & Dick is pretty much the nadir of cheesy made-for-TV biopics, one that cannot even rise to guilty pleasure or so-bad-it's-good status. Not recommended. [Note: DVD extras include interviews with stars Lindsay Lohan (4 min.) and Grant Bowler (4 min.), director Lloyd Kramer (4 min.), writer Christopher Monger (4 min.), executive producer Larry A. Thompson (4 min.), and costume designer Salvador Pérez (2 min.). Bottom line: a decent extras package for a misfire of a biopic.] (D. Liebenson)
