Sir Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor, set in 18th-century Scotland, spawned four operas, of which only Gaetano Donizetti's survives within the repertory. Lucie de Lammermoor is the story of feuding families: Lucie loves Edgard but marries Arthur, offing him on their wedding night and then going crazy (two high E's scored there). When Edgard finds out, too late, that she loved him after all, he falls on his dueling sword and expires in true operatic fashion, while singing at full voice. Filmed live at the Opéra National de Lyon, this production of the French version, newly rescued from limbo, is a tauter mounting, trimming Lucia's cavatina, “Regnava nel silenzio," from the first act and her scene with her tutor in the second, as well as eliminating the roles of some minor characters. The worthy cast features Patrizia Ciofi as Lucie, Roberto Algana as Edgard, and Marc Laho as Arthur, all supported by the wonderful chorus and orchestra, conducted with strength and precision by Evelino Pidò. Unfortunately, the production does not photograph well: everything's dark, except for the intense lighting of faces (often shown in close-up), so following the action through the murk becomes both frustrating and distracting. Presented in DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1, and LPCM stereo, the DVD is optional; however, if you enjoy the French version, I'd recommend buying the CD which features Ciofi or wait for a cast recording.
