Rarely does art and honesty co-exist onscreen, but writer/director Martine Dugowson pulls it off with heart, humor, and oodles of style in this absorbing story of a friendship between two Parisian waifs that lasts a quarter of a century. Meeting in a ballet class at the age of seven, Mina (Romane Bohringer) and Ethel (Elsa Zylberstein), a couple of ugly ducklings--Mina, a natural born rebel; Ethel, a natural born follower--become bosom buddies. The film follows their relationship through teenage crushes, struggling careers, and love affairs that cause as much strain on the women's relationship as on their own hearts. Meticulous attention to period detail, a vibrant assured script, winning performances, and masterful direction make Mina Tannenbaum a genuine joy. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
