Well, there goes the auteur theory: director Kevin Dowling, whose The Sum of Us was one of my favorite films of 1995 returns with one of my least favorite videos of 1997. This miserably unfunny mess stars the normally dependable Danny Aiello as Al McCord, a regular middle-aged guy who's picked up by Ellie (Angelina Jolie) and whisked out in the desert to meet her mother, Julie (Anne Archer, in an extremely tiresome dumb blonde [dyed] role), whose being held semi-hostage by her psychopathic redneck boyfriend Boyd (Michael Biehn). Got that? As the film lurches madly from one pointless, forced scene to the next, you'll begin to suspect that when 95 minutes are up, there will be enough loose threads lying around to knit a full-body sweater for Shaquille O'Neal. Not recommended. (R. Pitman)
