Cinderella may seem outdated to our ‘90s sensibilities, but it's still a far cry better than this saccharin romantic comedy. After a train wreck, poor pregnant Connie Doyle (Ricki Lake) is mistaken for the dead daughter-in-law of wealthy society matron, Grace Winterbourne (Shirley MacLaine). Though Connie wants to come clean, she falls in love with Grace's other son, Bill (Brendan Frasier), and they plan a wedding. Will Connie's true identity be revealed? Will she keep the man she loves? Will this movie insult your intelligence? Yes, and then some. The relationship between Bill and Connie goes from intense distrust to drooling love faster than a Porsche on the autobahn. If that weren't enough, the movie's message--get pregnant, lie to a rich man, and live happily ever after--is as cynical as it gets, despite the chirpy feel-good tone. (L. Russo)
