"This isn't America, this is L. A." Yeah, and it's not Chinatown, either, but not for lack of trying. This testosterone-fest stars Nick Nolte, America's answer to Gerard Depardieu, Chazz Palminteri and Reservoir Dogs Michael Madsen and Chris Penn as members of the Hat Squad, who dispatched their own brand of justice in 1950's Los Angeles. The investigation of a prostitute's murder, of course, leads to bigger, deadlier things. A handsome production, not without style. The supporting cast, including a sinister John Malkovich and Treat Williams, keep things interesting. An optional purchase. (K. Bottom line: a film that split the critics on its initial release, this remains an optional purchase.][DVD/Blu-ray Review—Oct. 21, 2014—Kino Lorber, 107 min., R, DVD: $19.95, Blu-ray: $29.95—Making its latest appearance on DVD and debut on Blu-ray, 1996's Mulholland Falls boasts a nice transfer and a DTS-HD 5.1 and stereo soundtrack on Blu-ray, but no extras.
