In this first movie spin-off from the insanely popular anime and manga series, titular hero ninja Naruto, along with his team of Sasuke, Sakura, and mentor Kakashi, are tasked with safeguarding Yukie Fujikaze, an actress who plays inspiring heroine Princess Gale. Plans call for the final scenes in The Adventures of Princess Gale to be shot in the Land of Snow, but Yukie keeps trying to run away. Eventually, viewers learn that 10 years ago Yukie was forced to flee from that particular country when her father the king was killed. Now, the new ruler Doto wants Yukie's crystal necklace, which she would be more than happy to give up in defeat—except for Naruto's stubborn will and commitment to never, ever give in. Surely such determination in the face of hardship can give even an icy princess hope? Naruto—The Movie plays like an impressively animated extended episode of the TV series, with sparkling fight scenes and opportunities for each character to shine. Presented on a dual-language disc, rated T (for Teen), DVD extras include the 10-minute lowbrow short “Konoha Annual Sports Festival,” focusing on Naruto's quest for an available toilet facility. Sure to be popular, this is recommended. Aud: P. (L. Martincik)
