With a name like Mooney (Liane Balaban, in a fetching debut), it should come as no surprise that the restless 15-year-old girl who answers to the emblematic moniker is a bit of a dreamer. In particular, she longs to break free of her provincial, small-town existence in Nova Scotia and move to New York City. Her teacher (Andrew McCarthy, the little-seen-lately Brat Packer) is sympathetic, and helps secure a scholarship to a Manhattan arts school--a prize that Mooney's conservative Catholic parents nevertheless oppose. An “official selection” of the Sundance and Toronto film festivals, this passably entertaining coming of age odyssey from Allan Moyle (Pump Up the Volume) is definitely optional. (T. Rich)
