Martin Bell, brilliantly played by Ewan McGreggor, is a cash-poor law student who takes a job as the lone night watchman at the town mortuary. With hardly a moment to study legal briefs and by-laws, Martin finds himself busier than expected with a local serial killer on the prowl. Before long, Bell learns that all the clues lead back to him. This gripping, gruesome tale is fortified by a talented supporting cast, including Patricia Arquette and Nick Nolte (who plays Inspector Cray with brio), while the stark lights, metal tables, labyrinthine hallways, and sheet-enshrouded bodies make for an indelibly creepy setting. In the same vein as the great thrillers of the ‘50s and ‘60s, Nightwatch keeps you on the edge of your seat guessing "who dunnit" until the very end. Highly recommended. (A. Glover)
