Leave it to the sublimely inventive Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Traffic, The Limey) to do a remake the right way around--that is, by starting with a mediocre movie that didn't live up it to its potential, and setting out to make it better. This high-tech retooling of a forgettable Rat Pack casino heist caper boasts an all-star cast (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac and Don Cheadle to name a few) and an incredibly complicated, yet in a sense deceptively simple, scheme to pilfer $150 million from the central vault of several Las Vegas casinos. Unabashedly escapist fun, Ocean's Eleven is saddled with a few plausibility problems, but it's a classy, creative, well-acted joyride of a movie nonetheless. Recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
