It's a little miracle that director Tim Reid got this movie made (even PBS turned down the project). Now it's up to audiences to discover it on video after its critically-acclaimed, but sparsely-distributed theatrical run. Based on Clifton L. Taulbert's book, this heartfelt memoir of growing up in the Mississippi Delta focuses less on segregation and racism and more on celebrating the black community that "nurtured and protected each other and enjoyed life together." Al Freeman, Jr. is worthy of Academy recognition as great-grandfather Poppa, a pillar of strength and dignity. Highly recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
