A low-key but absorbing romantic drama, 1999's One More Kiss is built on a simple premise. New York-based career woman Sarah Hopson (winningly played by Valerie Edmond) chucks life in the fast lane and returns to her native Scotland in hopes of taking up where she left off with childhood sweetheart Sam Murray (Gerard Butler), who's now a successful restaurateur. Even though Sarah broke Sam's heart by running off to America, she's convinced she can repair the damage—until, that is, she learns he's married. Director Vadim Jean, working from a fine screenplay by Suzie Halewood, makes the story work because he refuses to fall back on the synthetic contrivances of most Hollywood-produced romances. Benefiting enormously from its refreshing lack of artifice, as well as excellent performances from the principal players, One More Kiss is a genuinely engaging film. Recommended. (E. Hulse)
