This BBC family movie, which premiered on A&E in the summer of 2004, follows a mischievous young lion cub named Suki, who lives in the Serengeti and struggles to survive when tragedy befalls her “pride” (tribe). In an interesting twist, cutting-edge CGI techniques are used to add facial expressions and mouth movements to the live-action animals, whose voices are supplied by Kate Winslet (Suki), Rupert Graves, Helen Mirren, Robbie Coltrane, and Jim Broadbent, among others. Filmed in East Africa, Pride features amazing close-up footage, shot with a remote-controlled “boulder-cam” (a specially designed camera ingeniously mounted on tiny wheels inside a fake rock). Recommended. [Note: DVD extras include two featurettes--“The Making of Pride” and “Lions: Spy in the Den." Viewers will be amazed by what went into the making of Pride, but should be aware that there is graphic footage of lions killing and eating their prey (nothing that can't be seen any night on cable, but still pretty raw for young kids). Bottom line: a solid extras package for a technically amazing film.] (E. Hulse)
