This two-disc set from Kino International will be of interest to both baseball fans and silent-movie aficionados, as the latter will recognize in this compilation of feature films and short subjects dating from 1899-1926 such early-cinema luminaries as John Gilbert, Colleen Moore, Charles Ray, and John Bunny. New York Giants manager John McGraw (an early Hall of Famer) turns up in a 1917 short, “One Touch of Nature,” while the Sultan of Swat himself, the legendary Babe Ruth, stars in the 1920 feature Headin' Home, which demonstrates that in addition to being a powerhouse hitter, the Bambino was also a big ham and master showman. And Felix the Cat takes to the diamond in a 1922 cartoon, “Felix Saves the Day.” Ranging in length from one minute to 73 minutes, this baker's dozen of cinematic curiosities offers interesting historic peeks at what was once called America's Favorite National Pastime. A lovingly produced set, Reel Baseball is recommended. (E. Hulse)
