A stunningly ingenuous performance by 13-year-old Aranka Coppens will leave you wanting to jump through the screen and rescue her yourself in this tragic Belgian film about an innocent girl whose turbulent imagination and desire to see her inconstant mother contented begin to overwhelm her precarious psyche, leading her down a dangerous path dominated by fantasy. Writer-director Patrice Toye's deceptively simple direction mixes Rosie's bleak tenement lifestyle with an empathetic dose of tenderness and delicacy, and the young actress artlessly juxtaposes her character's naiveté, her budding sexuality and her growing dysfunction with an affecting realism. Recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
