Winning story about a young Irish lad's coming-of-age in a small village. After his mother dies, Danny (Matt Keeslar) leaves his overbearing policeman father (Albert Finney) and takes up with a wacky local character named Prunty and a lovely young lass (Victoria Smurfit, in a strong debut). Fine writing, good direction, and solid acting by the cast makes this an entertaining adolescent romance story with a bit of a political edge (this is Ireland, remember). Recommended. (R. Pitman)
