A refreshing entry in the recent rush of materials about the Lewis and Clark expedition, the three volume Sacagawea series is told entirely in the first person and staged as a re-enactment, buttressed with nice map graphics. In St. Louis to Ft. Mandan, Sacagawea remembers her childhood with the Shoshone, her capture and abduction by a Hidatsa warrior, and later her new home with her French-speaking trader husband. In the Hidasta/Mandan village, her path crosses that of Lewis, Clark, and the Corps of Discovery commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Territory. The excellent narration includes many “human interest” angles, including Native American curiosity about Lewis's large dog (“the size of a buffalo calf!”) and York, Clark's slave. The other titles in the series (series price: VHS: $147, single site; $379, multi-site) are: Over the Rockies to the Pacific and Ft. Clatsop & The Journey Home. Highly recommended. Aud: I, J, H, P. (R. Reagan)
