Technically speaking, this uncalled-for sequel is a real mess. The editing is pathetic, the plot--if you can call it that--is just a series of unrelated horror movie japes put in almost random order, characters disappear completely from the story without explanation and blatant continuity errors abound because some gags where left on the cutting room floor while the follow-up jokes were kept. But comically speaking, Scary Movie 2 is an almost constant laugh riot of extreme gross-out humor and surprisingly limber lampoonery--and this coming from someone who hated the first Scary Movie and was irritated when the Wayans brothers (director Keenen Ivory and stars Shawn and Marlon) broke their promise not to make a sequel. Featuring Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Kathleen Robertson, David Cross, James Woods, Tim Curry and Tori Spelling, the film deftly riffs on The Exorcist, The Haunting, Save the Last Dance, Hannibal, Silence of the Lambs, What Lies Beneath, Little Shop of Horrors, huge chunks of Hollow Man, and Mission: Impossible 2, just to name a few. A strong, optional purchase. (R. Blackwelder)[Blu-ray Review—Sept. 13, 2011—Lionsgate, 82 min., R, $14.99—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 2001's Scary Movie 2 features a so-so transfer and DTS-HD 5.1 audio. Blu-ray extras are identical to the DVD release, including alternate and deleted scenes (44 min.), a behind-the-scenes featurette (8 min.), a “Here Kitty, Kitty” scene segment (2 min.), a “Special Effects Tour” (6 min.), “Behind the Makeup” (4 min.), “Scary Effects” (2 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a serviceable Blu-ray debut for a weak sequel.]
