Jennifer Lopez throws her heart and soul into her first starring role as Selena, the Mexican-American pop sensation who realized her crossover dreams, only to be tragically shot by her fan club president who had been accused of embezzlement. Its an extraordinary story made ordinary by Hollywood bio-pic cliches (Papa doesn't approve of Selena's skimpy stage outfits, Papa disapproves of the guitar player with whom she falls in love). But Selena's icon status makes this must-viewing for her devoted fans; and female role models, Hispanic or otherwise, are a rarity onscreen. A strong optional purchase. (K. Lee Benson)
