Set in 1968 gang-ruled Glasgow, Small Faces follows thirteen-year-old Lex MacLean (newcomer Iain Robertson) as he struggles to find his identity. He looks to his brothers--gentle, artistic Allen and mean-spirited gang member Bobby--but decides to carve out his own niche by joining a rival gang. Chronicling the often rapid, intense, and painful destruction of innocence, the film combines awkward naiveté with violent reality to create a convincing and brutal coming-of-age story. Robertson personifies complex teen angst, and co-writer/director Gilles Mackinnon imparts the film with a fast pace and anarchistic spirit. Recommended. (L. Russo)
