Northern Ireland's "troubles" truly hit home in this wrenching drama about two women who are united when their jailed sons embark on an IRA hunger strike. Helen Mirren and Fionulla Flanagan give two of the year's best performances as apolitical schoolteacher Kathleen Quigley and local "troublemaker" and fervent IRA supporter Annie Higgins. They must make the agonizing choice whether to support their sons' cause, or save their lives by authorizing the unyielding prison authorities to force-feed them. This film's release last Christmas(!) was only a rumor, so quickly did it leave theaters. On home video, it can receive the attention it deserves. Highly recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
