Statistically Speaking

Mavis (Alfre Woodard) is over 45--a demographic that the statisticians say precludes marriage. She's a clumsy buffoon whose sole emotional response to any situation is a wide-eyed, slack-jawed stare. Egged on by girlfriend Roxie Roker (who's giving the part her all) and a ridiculous support group named "Heffers" ("just say moo") she embarks on a campaign to find Mr. Right. In a rapid fire series of scenes we are treated to some very crude and unfunny situations (one date drops dead at the dinner table) and a truly infantile highjacking scene featuring Garry Marshall and his "C Men." During the inevitable conclusion at the altar Mavis still can't get it right--her bouquet winds up on the roof! Who is this for? What ARE these estimable actors doing here? With the exception of a brief, affecting performance by Karen Malina White as Mavis' daughter, they are all wasting their time and ours. Skip it. Aud: P. (J. Reed)
