The latest entrant in Short Stories: A Video Anthology--a series filled with rough gems and downright clunkers (see VL-4/92)--Fran Rizzo's Sullivan's Last Call is a surprisingly smart and sexy slice-of-dysfunctional life involving the titular Sullivan (played by writer/director Rizzo) and an old flame (Steven Mark Friedman) who suddenly shows up, wines and dines Sullivan and then, after returning to her apartment, drops the somewhat romance-killing news that he is now celibate. By turns bemused, miffed, even challenged by her old lover's revelation, Sullivan toys with the guy: eventually dragging a story out of him--involving seeing "signs" in the recurrence of a porno actress's name. Part witty repartee, part sexy banter, Sullivan's Last Call is a sly commentary on male sexual hypocrisy which is well-acted, well-scripted, and an understandable film festival audience favorite. Recommended for larger collections. Aud: C, P. (R. Pitman)
