From the director of To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, comes this swooning romantic melodrama based on Joseph Conrad's short story, "Amy Foster." Rachel Weisz stars as servant girl Amy, an outcast in her Cornwall village, who, like Ariel in The Little Mermaid, keeps a caveful of keepsakes she has received from the sea. Her newest treasure is Yanko (Vincent Perez), a Russian emigrant who is washed ashore after his ship is sunk in a raging storm. The star-crossed lovers, aided by a compassionate doctor (Ian McKellan) and a compassionate invalid (Kathy Bates) will, of course, fatefully scandalize the small-minded community. Those who lost their hearts to Titanic's Jack and Rose will relate. Others will not be swept away. Optional. (K. Lee Benson)
