True Hong Kong chop-socky--when it's done right (i.e., over the top)--is more satisfying to moi than a mandala or Zen koan for calming my spirits. Who can deny the exquisite beauty of a young stud kicking his opponent through a quarter-mile patch of forest with his feet never touching the ground. Yes, the wires are visible (carp on, purists), but that adds to the charm of this story of a young Tai Chi master (Jacky Wu) who must fight corrupt English merchants who are poisoning the Middle Kingdom with opium...and...win the heart of a lovely revolutionary (Christy Chung). The plot is not the main draw here: it's the action and humor, which includes Wu's devastating ‘Braid stance attack' (we're talking a welt-raising hair lashing) and one of the oddest versions of the Tango I've ever seen. Enthusiastically recommended. (R. Pitman)
