Among the last of the “classic” animated Disney films, 1970's The Aristocats certainly doesn't compare with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, or even 101 Dalmatians, but it still holds up as better-than-average children's entertainment, revolving around a family of Parisian cats who inherit a lavish estate, only to be evicted unceremoniously by their former mistress' greedy butler, who covets the property for himself. Stranded in the French countryside, the fearful felines meet up with a big-hearted tomcat (voiced by Phil Harris), who helps them to reclaim their fortune. DVD extras on this “special edition” include a deleted sequence, an excerpt from the Wonderful World of Disney-aired doc “The Great Cat Family” (hosted by Walt Disney), a featurette with the Sherman Brothers (who composed the songs), the vintage animated short “Bath Day” (not listed on the DVD jacket), a “Fun With Language” game, and a “Virtual Kitten” feature. A must for Disney completists, this is a strong optional purchase elsewhere. (E. Hulse)[Blu-ray Review—Aug. 28, 2012—Walt Disney, 78 min., G, $39.99—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1970's The Aristocats sports a great transfer and a DTS-HD 5.1 soundtrack. Blu-ray extras include an excerpt from the 1956 episode of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color “The Great Cat Family” (13 min.), “The Lost Open” segment on a deleted scene (10 min.), the deleted song “She Never Felt Alone” (8 min.), the 1946 short “Bath Day” (7 min.), “The Sherman Brothers: The Aristocats of Disney Songs” on the songwriting team (4 min.), the “Oui Oui Marie” music video, a viewing option with onscreen lyrics, a song selection option, plus a DVD copy of the film (including a “Disney Virtual Kitten,” a “Fun with Language” game, and a scrapbook). Bottom line: a welcome Blu-ray debut for this lesser Disney classic.]
