Even considering the odd choice of Richard Dreyfuss (Duddy Kravitz?!?) as voice-over narrator, this latest adaptation of Jack London's ultimate man and his dog story is fairly well done. Set in the Yukon during the gold rush fever days, London's tale traces the path of a sled dog named Buck (who, frankly, looks more like Beethoven, than London's majestic beast) as he endures harsh weather, bickering pack mates, and cruel owners before teaming up with the even-tempered, big-hearted prospector John Thornton (Rutger Hauer). Torn between his feelings for Thornton and his "natural" tendency to follow the call of the wild, Buck's paw is forced during the tragic climax. Although he doesn't really look the part, "Buck" is a superb actor--easily stealing scenes from his human counterparts--and Dreyfuss's narration (though lacking authority) offers viewers a generous helping of London's prose. Originally made-for-TV, this classic drama is warmly recommended, especially when you consider that there are undoubtedly some guys out there who think this is the greatest love story ever told. (R.
