The ironically-named Hunter (James Duval, who broods nicely) is a teenager with a big chip or two on his shoulder: he has "half-breed" status as part Cherokee, part Anglo; suffers from hemophilia (a “white man's disease”); and, on the one hunting trip his protective mother allows, commits the cardinal sin of killing a doe instead of a buck--thus saddling the lad with the titular nickname. While the acting in this coming-of-age story is quite capable (including that of Kevin Anderson as the father), the central issue of self-determination is less subtly handled, with the cover-art tagline, “heroes make their own destiny,” pretty much summing up the sledgehammer-driven message here. Definitely optional. (T. Rich)
