This sentimental Brazilian import tells the touching story of Joãozinho, a young boy living in an impoverished rural village whose beloved grandmother is gravely ill. After hearing his grandmother praying for death, Joãozinho decides to sell his beloved pet goat Mocinha in order to obtain the medicine necessary to save her life. But no one in the village wants the goat, so Joãozinho and Mocinha embark on a journey to Brasilia, the nation's capital, in the hopes of making the sale. Admittedly, much of the film's storyline is telegraphed too far in advance (especially the scenes involving the boy's shaky navigation of the big city's unfamiliar culture), but this is a genuinely sweet and sincere movie that wears its heart firmly, if shamelessly, on its sleeve. Plus, young Diego Borges gives a refreshingly natural performance as Joãozinho, a boy forced to grow up very quickly. Recommended. (P. Hall)
