Writer/director/actor Rick Barnes had a promising concept--what if the tabloids are true?--but The Enquirers suffers from an overabundance of psychoanalysis. The story follows a standup comic (Stephen Lohrentz) who is offered the unique opportunity of performing on other planets. He's just not sure the alien/agent who hires him is for real. With his low-budget, labor-of-love, Barnes makes the critical mistake of shooting a bunch of people talking, never using visuals to tell the story or convey a character's thoughts. The Enquirers also lags in its pacing, taking too much time out to intellectualize about the effects of TV on Americans and the spiritually devoid world. What we really want to know is what would happen if the tabloids were true? Not recommended. (L. Russo)
