With The Hangover becoming the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, this formulaic raunchy sequel from writer-director Todd Phillips was inevitable. Two years after the Vegas fiasco, Stu (Ed Helms) is engaged to Lauren (Jamie Chung), whose parents are hosting a lavish wedding at an exotic resort in their native Thailand. Although Stu opts for a subdued bachelor brunch, buddies Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) are determined to party, so just before the big day the trio gather for a bonfire on the beach, along with the bride's precocious 16-year-old brother Teddy (Mason Lee). With one beer each and marshmallows to roast, what could go wrong? “Where are we?” Phil wonders when he wakes up in a sleazy Bangkok hotel room. “I can't believe this is happening again,” wails Stu, whose face now has a permanent tribal tattoo. There's a severed finger in a bowl of water and a drug-dealing, cigarette-smoking capuchin monkey in the bathroom. But where's Teddy? Desperate to find the missing teenager, the guys struggle to recall what happened the previous night, retracing their debauchery through Bangkok's sexual playground, and joining up with Asian mobster Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) on a search that leads them to Buddhist monks, Russian drug dealers, female impersonators, an American tattooist (Nick Cassavetes), a crime boss (Paul Giamatti), and Mike Tyson. The concept is just not as fresh this time around. Optional. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include a gag reel (5 min.), and trailers. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release are an “Unauthorized Documentary” featurette (25 min.), “The Comedy Rhythm of Todd Phillips” on the director (7 min.), a “Not Your Everyday Monkey” featurette (2 min.), a “Bangkok Tour with Chow” with costar Ken Jeong (2 min.), a brief action mash-up segment, bonus DVD and digital copies of the film, and the BD-Live function. Bottom line: a solid Blu-ray extras package for a disappointing sequel.] (S. Granger)
