Denzel Washington's intensely defiant, deeply immersed performance as wrongly-imprisoned, civil rights era boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter is pure Oscar material (though he lost that fight to Kevin Spacey), burning with the festering, subterranean anger of miscarried justice in a role perfectly suited to Washington's brand of charismatic integrity. A core-shaking, true-life biography, director Norman Jewison's film is a lovingly crafted (if a bit pandering) look into the heart of a man who experienced firsthand the dark side of the justice system, but found hope 16 years later in appeals engineered by a handful of suburbanite do-gooders, lead by an inner-city kid taken under their wing, who read Carter's autobiography and became dedicated to seeing him freed.
